The story behind NEPA:

They say that smell is the sense most closely tied to memories. For me, it’s true.

Anytime I smell a wood fire, especially on a hazy day in the summertime, it takes me back to Nigeria. I can see the fire pit outside my grandmother’s house. I think about meals being prepared and water being boiled over an open flame. I can smell lanterns being lit and hear generators churning to life because NEPA—the power company for the country—has cut off power for the night.

I always smile at the smell because it takes me back to a place where my family is all together. It reminds me that I come from people who have learned to find their own power, start their own fires, and make their own light.
